Process

Each student frames and describes a documentary project on a topic of their interest and choosing related to the Montagnards. (See the Partners page on this site for links to the students' project descriptions).

Each student then gathers media assets --photographs, audio files and video clips-- to support their project idea and tell the story they want to tell.
  • Some of these media assets must be gathered via field work --for example by capturing image, audio, and video data at a live event, interaction, demonstration, performance, or etc. involving Montagnard people. In some instances field work will be done by one or two members in a group, and "brought back" for others to use. (Events and related opportunities are listed on the Plans page on this site, and also in the Upcoming Events panel located in the right column of this site. Individual contacts with Montagnards can also be arranged.)

  • Other media assets, music clips for example, can be gathered via the internet on an as-needed basis.

  • Voice-over (produced either while recording video footage, or later as a separate process) can be used to 'glue' the assets together and provide narrative unity.
Each student then assembles their gathered assets into a short video documentary, posts it to YouTube, and embeds it in an entry on their individual blog. I will then link to each student's video from the Products page on this site.
  • It is recommended that students use Camtasia, iMovie, or Windows Movie Maker to assemble their documentaries, although other programs (Final Cut Pro for example) can be used if students are proficient in their use. There are ample help documents and tutorials online and in the help menus for these programs.
