Plans

Students at UNCSA were asked to identify topics of particular interest related to Montagnard  culture. These topics were then categorized and organized around events. Our plan is to document the events with photography, audio recording, and video recording, and assemble these assets into short documentary videos.

Sarah Towery
Adam Weiner

C--Drama, Dance, Storytelling
Srin is a one-woman mini-hurricane. She teaches kids how to dance. She might warrant an invitation from UNCSA? General interest in these areas, desire to see performances, learn about history firsthand, etc.

II. HISTORY

Wars: Against Japan, France, Americans and Vietnamese...Any French speakers? Again, students should do some strong background reading so they can foolow events. Otherwise, they will be lost. An alternate approach would be to ask Women (see below) their war experiences. The Vietnamese are historically portrayed as people ready to fight to assert independence from colonial powers. Within that struggle, the Montagnards have fought against Vietnamese dominance.
Students interested should be prepared to attend the Memorial Day remembrance in Asheboro.
Hjuan, Ngich Rahlan
Thomas Eban
Thomas meets with Nay Rong and a bunch of Montagnard and other indigenous peoples (Nung, Chin, Hmong) who fought with US forces. Y Buom Nie was among the soldiers who fought with American special forces.

Page 55 contains the photo of Thomas (2nd from left), who now lives on
Merritt Dr. This artifact (National Geo, Jan 1965) would be a good start for a
discussion on war. http://www.sfalx.com/h_national_geographic.htm

Catholic Church here in GSO...

III. PEOPLE TODAY AND THEIR COMMUNITY

A--The Montagnard community in general, as a whole, and also their impact on our culture, not just our culture's impact on theirs

Cortney Key

B--Traditional Beliefs to Christian Religion
This, too, could be an overview "talking heads" event. Y Siu Hlong, MDA ED Raleigh Bailey, CNNC Eugene Pierce
(Part 1: See Drama, Dance, Storytelling) Part 2: Christian Religion... Makes sense to go to an actual service or two. Y Hin Nie, Pastor of United Montagnard Christian Church Pierre K Bruih, deacon, St Mary's Catholic Church Jimmy Cillpam, pastor at Glenwood Friends' Montagnard ministry Broi Toploi, deacon at Rankin Baptist's Montagnard ministry (brother to Pierre) ...many other contacts This is could be a "doing" event. Interested students should prepare to attend services.

Jessica Appolinario
Heather Collins
Ciera Edwards
Angel Fant
Sam Shumway
Ethan Flowe

C--Women in Montagnard society
This would be an important first-time event consistent with other projects underway. Suggest that we facilitate with a meeting here in GSO to kick things off. This could be an especially brutal eye-opener. These and other women in their 40s and early 50s are pretty amazing. H Nier Kwol Ksa Huyen Tran's dad was an African American and her mom was Vietnamese. She was one of thousands of Amerasians to gain refugee status to come to the US. She knows both Vietnamese and Montagnard communities. We nominated her to participate in a film project so she could tell her story. See http://vimeo.com/12917620

Felicia Mani
Cydny Rodgers
Martha Sheppard

D--Youth
Suggest we combine this as a UNCSA tour Sallie wants to become a health worker Lidi Jeo Y Sel wants to go to France to learn French and study Montagnard culture Ha H wants to return to her mother's village and document life there Bet Phillip Loi wants to become a police officer in Greensboro Young folks and young adults might be interested in touring the UNCSA campus.

Ken Marshall
Mazena Puksto

E-- Language
History and issues related to language.
Betsy Renfrew

Noelle Franco

F--A Day in the Life: Greensboro and Central Highlands
Track what's going on in one 24 hour day here and abroad. Investigate how people stay in touch in the global village. This is a joint effort between UNCSA tech "experts" and Montagnard collaborators. We could suggest some willing families who would like to participate.
